The Keymaker is a character from The Matrix Reloaded, the second film in the Matrix trilogy. He is an exiled program that operates outside the restrictions of the Matrix and fashions keys that can be used by other programs within the system to access "back doors", allowing those programs to roam the entire Matrix freely. The Keymaker is portrayed by Randall Duk Kim.

History[]

During the film, Neo is instructed by the Oracle to find the Keymaker so that he can gain access to the Source, the very core of the Matrix. Only this way can Neo stop the Machines from destroying Zion in the real world and thus bring the war to an end. Neo, Morpheus and Trinity narrowly manage to rescue the Keymaker from the clutches of the Merovingian, a corrupt program who runs a criminal cartel within the Matrix. After escaping both Agents and the Merovingian's triggermen on the freeway, Neo, Morpheus and the Keymaker organize a plan to access the "back door" without being detected by the Machines.

Death[]

Neo, Morpheus and the Keymaker enter the back door corridor only to be confronted by the rogue Agent Smith and his army of duplicates. The Keymaker manages to flee as Neo and Morpheus fight the Smiths, using his keys to exit and enter through different back doors in order to evade Smith and open the door that will lead Neo to the Source. As Neo and Morpheus make a break for the open door, the Smiths all turn and draw guns. The Keymaker closes the door just as Neo and Morpheus enter, but he is struck by several bullets. Before being deleted completely, the Keymaker gives Neo and Morpheus a key each that they can use to reach their respective destinations.
