Scott Summers - aka Cyclops - is the field leader of the X-Men in various Marvel media. A mutant human with the power to emit concussive energy blasts from his eyes, he wields this ability to great effect. However, a brain injury he sustained during childhood causes his optic blasts to fire constantly as long as his eyes are open, but he is able to hold the beams back by wearing glasses made of ruby-quartz.

In the X-Men film trilogy, Cyclops is portrayed by James Marsden.

Death(?)[]

In X-Men: The Last Stand, Cyclops is utterly distraught over the death of his lover Jean (which occurs in X-Men 2) and decides to leave the Xavier Mansion. In his grief, he travels to Alkali Lake in Canada, the place where Jean had died. He feels drawn to this place, as though the ghost of Jean is calling to him.

To Scott's astonishment and joy, he finds Jean has somehow returned and the two embrace. Jean tells Scott to take off his glasses, assuring him that she can control his optic blasts. The two then kiss passionately, but at that moment Jean appears to lose control and the Phoenix re-surfaces.

Wolverine and Storm later follow Scott to Alkali Lake to find Jean there, her telekinesis gone out of control as several rocks are floating in the air. Wolverine also finds Scott's ruby-quartz glasses floating around but no sign of Scott himself. It is presumed that the Phoenix used her power to kill Scott, but this is unconfirmed.

Alternate timeline[]

In X-Men: Days of Future Past, the timeline is radically altered after the X-Men prevent the assassination of Dr. Bolivar Trask, creator of the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots. Trask's crimes against mutants are exposed to the world and the Sentinel Program is dismantled following Trask's arrest. As a result of this, the events of the original X-Men film trilogy, as well as the dystopian Sentinel-ruled future never occur, so Scott and Jean are both still alive in the alternate timeline.
