Cybermen

The Cybermen are one of the most frequently recurring enemies in the British science fiction series Doctor Who. Second only to the Daleks, the Cybermen are among the deadliest of the Doctor's adversaries. They are a pseudo-race of cybernetically enhanced humanoids, all modified and crafted to think and appear identical.

Originally, the Cybermen began as a single human-like race from the planet Mondas, but following the ecological devastation of their homeworld, they began "upgrading" their bodies with machinery in order to survive. This singular desire to ensure their survival drove the Cybermen to view all organic life as weak and in need of upgrading, and so they began attacking other planets and converting the inhabitants into Cybermen as well. They typically only convert humans or species with near-human physiology, viewing races that don't meet this criteria as incompatible stock that must be destroyed. Because of these aspects, the Cybermen are feared and despised by all other beings across the universe. They have conquered many worlds over the course of their history and have attempted to dominate Earth on several occasions, only to be thwarted by the renegade Time Lord known as the Doctor.

Though certainly a powerful force in the universe, the Cybermen are not entirely invincible. While the Daleks have shown to be largely immune to conventional forms of attack, the Cybermen are vulnerable to heavy weapons, high explosives, directed energy weapons and high voltage electricity. In their early appearances, Cybermen were also highly allergic to gold as it interfered with their life-support systems, though this weakness has been phased out since Doctor Who's 21st century revival.

The Cybermen's appearances have changed multiple times over the years. Originally, they appeared to wear fabric sacks on their heads and carried bulky life-support systems on their torsos, though as time went on and costume design and special effects improved, they have come to appear more and more mechanical. Now the Cybermen appear to be completely robotic, their bodies covered head-to-toe in metallic armour.
